SZA

June 3, 2015

It’s funny how the times can change. I once thought my brother’s taste in music was immature and constantly tried to influence it by asking him to listen to my music (boring to him). As with everything it was only a matter of time before he grew into a more mature taste in music.

Now the tables have turned and he is the one suggesting new music to me and giving me songs to listen to and I absolutely love it.

Sometime last year before he came home he called me over the phone in excitement telling me there was someone I absolutely had to listen to and when he came home later that week, I was already expectant.

SZA

SZA2

I was completely taken, who is this neo-soul, alternative, ethereal carefree black girl goddess and why was I just hearing about her?

Admittedly, the first song and video I watched wasn’t the most accurate representation of her, It’s a little more upbeat than her usual, it reminded me of Solange but they are different. A good way to be introduced to her music anyway.

Don’t you just love her, um for lack of a better word, “vibe”?

Julia is definitely one of SZA’s more upbeat songs, she has 2 EPs and released her album Z in 2014. This album has been my companion on many long drives and got me through the days of my long commute to work.

So faves, ready? (really just get the album)

Babylon- Haunting. moody.

Was it worth it?

Would you do it again?

Aren’t you tired

Always making amends…

Shattered ring

And last one “Green Mile”

Her subject of her music can be a bit dark so if you’re not into that you might not like her. I also love her carefree style- did I say this already? – and her beautiful curly locks.

Give her a listen and let me know what you think.

What are you listening to these days?

Love always,

Sabirah

I had read about her a few times, and made notes to my self to check her out but I didn’t, until now.
I like Julia and will find Z. Thanks for sharing 🙂
I’ve been listening to just one album for the last few weeks (I haven’t had the time to sit down with iTunes and put a new playlist on my iPhone)
James Bay- Chaos and The Calm.
I first listened to it at the beginning of the year, and I didn’t love it but I didn’t hate it. Then one day, I listened again and it was like I was hearing a different album. Off the top of my head right now, I’d compare him to another James. James Morrison. Check him out if you have the time 🙂
[my fave: Let It Go. It calms me down and just makes the world quiet for 4 minutes]
