International Women’s Day is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating gender parity.
International Women’s day 2017 and sigh, there is so much work to do. It’s almost disheartening to see that we are still fighting this fight. For equality, for gender parity, to be heard, seen, recognised and valued. It is actually is disheartening, but rather than be crushed by it, we have to rise up.
Some things are too heavy for my fragile heart but everyone can find their space to help, to do something in their community, sphere of influence and in their families, to create a better world for women and girls, to #BeBoldforChange which is this year’s theme. I’m finding mine.
Here’s what I am doing.
Amplifying women’s work- From the arts to the sciences and in-between, women are STILL overlooked in fields where they are doing as much and more than their male peers.I’m committed to praising and sharing women’s amazing work.
Calling for inclusion- Why isn’t there a woman on that board? Why aren’t there women on this panel? Why could you only find male speakers? Calling on people and organisations to do better.
Speaking up against violence- This one is hard for me because I’m so sensitive, but it’s not about just me. From daily micro aggressions to overt cases of violence, lending my voice to victims, educating the people in my life and protecting who I can. Also, not participating in violence of any sort.
Challenging stereotypes- Ugh Nigeria is just hard to live in when it comes to this, everyday left right and centre someone is saying some unfounded rubbish about women. I’m not going to lie I often avoid these conversations, especially at work, but perhaps, there’s a middle ground?
Support businesses owned by women, and businesses that support women and provide flexibility- Basically, I’m putting my money where my mouth is.
There’s more, but now it’s your turn.
Today, March 8th is International Women’s Day and the theme is #BeBoldForChange. What are you doing?
